A Regular Column by Shelby L. Stanton

Shelby L. Stanton, a veteran of the Vietnam War, served in Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand and performed advisory duty in support of Cambodian operations. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge. A 1970 Distinguished Military Graduate of Louisiana State University, he was commissioned as a lieutenant of infantry in the Regular Army. He is parachute, ranger, and special forces qualified. Following his medical retirement from the Army in the grade of captain, he earned a master's degree in education administration from Louisiana State University and a law degree from its law school. He is the author of thirteen books dealing with military affairs, military units, and military uniforms and equipment. They are:
